Marco Reus will only miss three to four weeks with ankle injury

Borussia Dortmund and Germany have received a huge boost with tests on Marco Reus revealing he will only be out for three to four weeks.

Reus had made a bright and productive start to Saturday’s Rivierderby against Schalke when, in the first half, a challenge with Florian Flick left him in serious discomfort and, to the dismay of his team-mates, needing urgent treatment.

He left the field on a stretcher and there were concerns it could put his place at this winter’s World Cup at risk.

However, Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl said: “The tests we did on Saturday didn’t show a fracture. It’s an external ligament injury in the ankle.

“Marco will be out three, up to four weeks, and then hopefully be available again.”

Reus has been replaced in Hansi Flick’s Germany squad by RB Leipzig defender Benjamin Henrichs for the Nations League games against Hungary and England.

Reus, who has suffered a litany of ligament and muscle injuries, famously missed Germany’s successful 2014 World Cup campaign because of an ankle injury suffered on the eve of the tournament.

The 33-year-old will hope to keep his World Cup ambitions alive by playing a part when the Bundesliga returns after the international break.
